After many frustrating setbacks and two cancelled court dates, we (finally) were able to finalize Ben’s adoption!
Our (completely amazing) attorney is in another city, so we “went to court” by phone.
We went to the Navy Legal Aid office, where a notary checked our IDs to make sure we weren’t impersonators and then swore us in.
Wayne called the court room.
I took a picture of Ben because it seemed like a good thing to do on the day he legally became one of us. He had no idea what was going on, by the way. I tried to explain it, but what can a four year old understand about legal stuff? On the way to the office, he asked me if he would see Omma and his baby brother (foster family in Korea).
We stated our full names for the judge and answered 4-5 questions, basically acknowledging that Ben is just like a biological child to us, that he has inheritance rights and that he would continue to be our son in the unfortunate case of our marriage ending. The judge then told us he was signing our final judgement and congratulated us! And it was over!
The notary kindly took a picture for us before we left.
And then there were (legally) five.
